Guatemala City and Day Trips

The area around Guatemala City is not the greatest, but Guatemalan day trips are UNMATCHED!

Accommodation:

We stayed in this Airbnb loft for $25 a night. They have an outside, rooftop gym with beautiful views and a market on the first floor.

Things To Do:

1. Iglesia Yurrita

A beautiful church in the city that has survived major earthquakes.

2. Paseo Cayala

This is an upscale shopping center, it's such a drastic change from the poverty outside.

3. Day trip to Antigua

The cutest little town you ever did see!! Everything is cute, quaint, and charming! We loved it so much we did 2 day trips.

To get here, take a chicken bus (a repurposed school bus) for less than a dollar. The drive will take about 1.5 hours. Sometimes the chicken buses are filled up so much you can't move, hence the name, so be prepared for that.

4. Day trip to Lake Atitlan

I suggest turning this day trip into an overnight trip because you won't want to leave! It's gorgeous and you can take a little boat to all the towns along the coast.

The drive will take 3 hours if you rent a car, which is what we did. I regret renting a car because our $10 a day rental turned into $100 with hidden fees. There are chicken buses that go here, they will probably take longer but might be worth it.

You can easily find a $10 Airbnb here for the night, I suggest staying in San Pedro!
